Towards the end of 2017, when our team received word that we'd be expanding from just a few stores to over 800, I began to look at the product holistically to see where and how engineering-informed design improvements could be introduced.
The first step was to create a sitemap of all internal pages and note the primary user and use case. The second was to document the processes and user experience architecture for both internal- and external-facing pages. Both documents could then be used as blueprints, helping inform our team where, how, and with what design systems additional capabilities could be introduced.
